week 6

Week 6
In today’s lecture information that was covered included Evaluating and authentication.
Within this information that was covered included that the content of the internet has no control, which means that nobody controls what is put on the world wide web. When looking for information on the internet it is best to look at the information that we are reading and going to use by doing a few different evaluations such as checking the author and there reliability, how current the information is and the accuracy of the information to make sure it is reliable.

The website http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think.html has different strategies to use when trying to see if a website is reliable.
Make sure you are in the right place:
When searching the internet make sure you are in the right place and know what you are looking for don’t just do a broad search but know exactly what you need to find as the net doesn’t always have everything you are looking for and you might find it a waste of time.
When in doubt, doubt:
People can put anything on the Internet so when looking for information if it doesn’t seem right don’t use it and try somewhere else.
Consider the source:
When looking at a site try and find out who wrote the site and other relevant information as this can help show if the information is reliable or not.
Know what’s happening:
When looking at the site try and work out the reason why the page has been designed and what it has been designed for.
Look at details:
While searching the website try and notice anything that could mean the site isn’t correct or reliable such as incorrect grammar and spelling, also look at the information being provided and make sure it can be backup.
When searching the web we need to make sure the information we are using is reliable and factual if it isn’t then we are likely to made a fool of or provide false information.
The website http://www.lib.virginia.edu/small/exhibits/sixties/index.html is called the Psychedelic 60s.
Authorship: the website provides information stating that the website was created by a university also it provides the dates it has been modified and when, the site was modified this year.
Accuracy: the information given in the website is based on facts and is back up therefore can be seen as reliable.
Purpose: the purpose of the website is to share information about the 60s
Detail: the information is detailed and has a lot of facts.
Overall Webpage: overall the webpage has a decent amount of information and is pretty well detailed and provides back up.
The website http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/decade60.html is called American Cultural history.
Authorship: the website has information about the other of the website.
Accuracy: the following website has information that is accurate and backed up with sufficient facts.
Purpose: the information in this website has the purpose of sharing the cultural information about America.
Detail: the detail in this website can be found to be well researched and very detailed, it provides facts that are backed up and even references as to where the information came from. Overall website: the website overall is decent and provides information that can be used and relied on.
