week 12

Week 12
In today’s lecture we covered information dealing with social and ethical issues. The lecture had five different sections.
The unique characteristics of the Internet2. Intellectual Property3. Plagiarism4. Security and privacy5. How to protect yourself.
The internet does not have anybody that controls what is put out there, this means any type of information can be put on the internet and we cant stop it. The Internet doesn’t have much protection from people and a lot of your things are not very safe, people can get your house and other information from the net and can use this against you. To help this we are told not to give out our personal information on different websites like Myspace and Facebook.
Task 1
Copyright information sheets
1- Research or study

When using material that is not our own work we are aloud to use this and get away with it, we just have to show evidence of referencing there work and not passing it off as our own work. This information is determined as fair copy if less or equal to 10 percent is the same as the original if not direct quoted.
2- Recipes
When making a recipe we are aloud to create it at home and write the recipe out in our own words but we cant try and sell it as our own recipe. This is called passing off and is illegal. Copyright on recipes last for around 70 years.
3- Photographers
When a photographer takes pictures he or she is generally the legal person of those pictures. This means that if you were to buy some off him or her and wanted to get them made up for lots of people you would have to ask for there permission or it would be classed as copyright and you can get in a lot of trouble. When a photo is taken it is protected from that very second and there is no registration for copyright in Australia.
4- Music
The copyright for music is free and will automatically apply as soon as the music is created. Music can be in two different parts the words and the beat these two parts can be copyrighted separately.

5- Owners of copyright
A physical item that belongs to a museum or gallery does not mean they have copyright for that item. If an owner has died then the copyright may of passed on to another person making it theirs and you would have to contact them for the copyright details not the dead.

Task 2
The website http://www.apra.com.au/music-users/online_mobile/online_mobile.asp talks to us about music online and how it is being used and manipulated. People are these days finding free programs that allow you to download music for free, this is bad due to the fact that with this music artists and other people don’t get paid as people are getting there music free and not having to worry about paying for it. But for people that do want to do the right thing there are programs that are legal and you buy music off the net so that the artist get a fair go with there music, these two programs are AMCOS and APRA.
Task 3
With this task we are asked to make a plan to help protect us against the Internet so we don’t get virus and other computer nasties.
When using the internet to help protect myself from the net I would not do the following, 1 a major one never give out personal information and bank details to people I didn’t know or might think is not who they say they are. 2 never reply to emails that seem dodgy or have information that I don’t know in and 3 have virus scanners and firewalls on my computer to help prevent people entering and takin my information.

week 10

Week 10
In today’s lecture we listened to information about information management, within this topic many things were covered. People experience problems with managing their information quick and easy. To manage our information we can use computers to help us with this. We can do this by some of the following, text, documents, presentations, assignments and images. Information can be formatted in two ways firstly atom-based, which includes books, paper and other items you can hold in you hand. Secondly bit-based which include electronic information.
Photobucketwith this I was able to create some folders that I will be able to add more websites to in the future this will help me as I have a lot of sites that I view.

week 9

Week 9
In today’s lecture the information that was covered was about communications. The way communication is done today is so different than it has been due to information and communication technology. Information and communication can be between individuals, businesses and other organizations. Communication takes place between different networks. There are four types of communications place dependant, place independent, synchronous and asynchronous. Some examples of information and communication technology include: mobile phones, ipods, email and laptops.
Tutorial
Task 1
In Google I search in groups Egyptology as this interests me.
When searching through the site I found that a lot of the information and people asking questions wanting answers. I found that people responded to these answers and helped them out. They also provided help and information that was just new and made me want to read it. I spend about 1 hour just looking through the site as I found it so interesting.
Task 2
I looked at the podcast sight from itunes, as I believe this has some very good free casts. I listened to two these were Hamish and Andy and summer heights high. I found these to be funny and worth listening to. Students that use podcasts could find it good for the fact that they can listen to the information over and over again making it easy to remember. Also they would be able to listen to information if they missed a lecture or tutorial at university making it easy for them to catch up. Also studying for exams could be easier you could go for a walk and listen to your study information.

week 8

Week 8
Today’s lecture was about giving a good presentation.
We were told about how to give a good presentation by having a good introduction, body and conclusion.
When you a giving a speech try and engage with the audience, also try and have something that will keep the audiences attention as peoples attention spans differ depending on the topic.
When you are making you speech prepare everything before hand, make sure all of you audio, visual and other items work also make sure you have backups if things do go wrong, such as a PowerPoint have a set of over heads ready in case the computer doesn’t work.
If you use PowerPoint in your presentations try and use good background and a font that isn’t to out there otherwise it wont look to good and sometimes be unreadable, only have a few dot points per slide and have a good font size that people don’t have to squint to read it.

week 7

Week 7
In today’s lecture we looked at the Endnote program. Endnote is a program that helps us with referencing our projects. In university we need to reference as plagiarism is a very big no, no and has server consequences. With the program Endnote we can find it easier to reference our information. Endnote can do a range of interesting things, all you need to do is put it in the APA 5th style and it can help you so much.
Tutorial
In the tutorial today we looked at the Endnote program and learnt how to use it and put it on our computer, we firstly downloaded it and then installed it.
Task 1 and task 2 In this task we firstly configured Endnote then we opened a few different sources and put them into the program and then took some text from it and then added a few in text references and end text references.

week 6

Week 6
In today’s lecture information that was covered included Evaluating and authentication.
Within this information that was covered included that the content of the internet has no control, which means that nobody controls what is put on the world wide web. When looking for information on the internet it is best to look at the information that we are reading and going to use by doing a few different evaluations such as checking the author and there reliability, how current the information is and the accuracy of the information to make sure it is reliable.
Tutorial
The website http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think.html has different strategies to use when trying to see if a website is reliable.
Make sure you are in the right place:
When searching the internet make sure you are in the right place and know what you are looking for don’t just do a broad search but know exactly what you need to find as the net doesn’t always have everything you are looking for and you might find it a waste of time.
When in doubt, doubt:
People can put anything on the Internet so when looking for information if it doesn’t seem right don’t use it and try somewhere else.
Consider the source:
When looking at a site try and find out who wrote the site and other relevant information as this can help show if the information is reliable or not.
Know what’s happening:
When looking at the site try and work out the reason why the page has been designed and what it has been designed for.
Look at details:
While searching the website try and notice anything that could mean the site isn’t correct or reliable such as incorrect grammar and spelling, also look at the information being provided and make sure it can be backup.
When searching the web we need to make sure the information we are using is reliable and factual if it isn’t then we are likely to made a fool of or provide false information.
The website http://www.lib.virginia.edu/small/exhibits/sixties/index.html is called the Psychedelic 60s.
Authorship: the website provides information stating that the website was created by a university also it provides the dates it has been modified and when, the site was modified this year.

Purpose: the purpose of the website is to share information about the 60s
Detail: the information is detailed and has a lot of facts.
Overall Webpage: overall the webpage has a decent amount of information and is pretty well detailed and provides back up.
The website http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/decade60.html is called American Cultural history.

week 5

Week 5

From the lecture slides today we were taught about different search engines. We were asked a few questions at the beginning about different search engines and other information about the Internet such as what is a Boolean search?

We were then told what a search engine is and what they are used for. “ A web based application that looks at all the sites on the web then puts them into lists/ categories based on textual information and key words.”

Different types of search engines
-Yahoo
-Google
-AltaVista

When using search engines you will more than likely get to many results than you need and have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what you can really use.

Tips for using search engines
1-use a range of different tools
2-when writing in keywords use many different words so can make a more controlled search
3-use advanced search places to find more precise information

In today’s tutorial we had to look at finding good search strategies and complete a quiz by using a search engine to find the answers.

Search strategies
1-brake down your search into defined keywords
2-make sure you know how to use the search engine well
3-search around to make sure information is fact
my quiz results to finish this quiz I used the yahoo search engine to find all the results as I found it gave me the answers directly.
